Churches present community concert

KNOXVILLE, TN – On Feb. 7, 2016, the congregations of First Baptist Knoxville and Mt. Zion Baptist Church will host a concert for the community featuring Babbie Mason. Mason will join First Baptist for their 11 a.m. worship service that Sunday; the concert will follow at 4 p.m. A five dollar donation is recommended at the door, and all proceeds will support the nonprofit organizations Family Promise of Knoxville and Knox Area Rescue Ministries.

Inducted into The Christian Music Hall of Fame in 2010, Babbie Mason has influenced the Christian community through her singing and songwriting for nearly three decades. Apart from music, Mason is also an author, teacher, motivational speaker and a television talk show host. She has shared the stage with President Jimmy Carter, Michael Jordan, President Gerald Ford, Steve Forbes and Jeff Foxworthy.

“Mason’s music has always spoken across race and generation with the Gospel story,” said Tom Ogburn, pastor of First Baptist Knoxville. “We are thrilled that this concert will not only be an act of community between First Baptist and Mt Zion, but also benefit our city.”

First Baptist Knoxville and Mt Zion Baptist have significant historical ties. First Baptist was chartered with both white and African American members. After the Civil War, two African American congregations came out of First Baptist:  Mt. Olive and later, Mt. Zion. This evening of music and worship will act as a relational renewal between the two churches and will trigger future endeavors of fellowship, worship and mission.
