TN Smokies beat Birmingham

(Aug. 28, 2017) The Tennessee Smokies are on the road and the team beat the Birmingham Barons 4-2 yesterday afternoon for their second straight win. Casey Bloomquist got the ball for Tennessee as he went five innings and only giving up two runs before being replaced by Tommy Thorpe, Jake Stinnett, and Craig Brooks out of the bullpen. Bloomquist would pick up his first win in his pitching debut with the Tennessee Smokies.

Birmingham mustered 11 hits on the afternoon, but failed to get the win. Hunter Jones got the scoring started for the Barons when he hit an RBI ground rule double to score Eloy Jimenez in the bottom of the third inning. Later in the bottom of the fifth, Eloy Jimenez would hit a solo shot to center field to put the Barons up 2-0.

In the top of the sixth, David Bote would hit a three-run homer that would knock in Charcer Burks and Jeffrey Baez to put the Smokies up 3-2. Burks would hit an RBI single in the top half of the seventh to score Andrew Ely which would put the Smokies up 4-2. That would be the last score of the game as the Smokies went on to take game two of the series 4-2.

Jordan Stephens would get the start for Barons. Stephens pitched six innings of three hit baseball while giving up three runs. Stephens would receive the loss on the night. Jake Johansen and Jace Fry would come in for the final three innings of relief for the Barons.

The Smokies are back in action tomorrow night for game three of the series with the Birmingham Barons. Chris Nunn is expected to be on the bump for Tennessee with first pitch set for 8:05 p.m. ET from Regions Stadium.
